CPTA Continuing Education Course Approvals
Share |

On November 6, 2009, the Physical Therapy Board of California's (PTBC) Continuing Competency Regulations went into effect. These regulations outline the standards for Continuing Competency for the physical therapy profes

sion in California. View the full regulations on the PTBC website.

After the regulations went into effect, the PTBC compiled a list of Recognized Continuing Competency Approving Agencies, including the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA, to approve Continuing Competency courses and provider on behalf of the PTBC. CPTA has been approving continuing education courses for 20 years, and since becoming recognized by the PTBC in 2009, CPTA has approved approximately 5,000 provider and individual applications, and the review committee has grown from just 12 members to over 40 members. CPTA maintains a database of all upcoming CPTA approved courses. You can search by course provider, date, location, or run a key word search to find courses to meet your needs.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a CPTA approved provider through the CPTA Approved Continuing Education provider. All APTA provided courses taken after November 6, 2009 are applicable to California licentiate's mandatory continuing competency requirements. APTA Sections and Chapters are not included in this approval and must apply for course approval.

Approval Applications

To help facilitate the application process, we have created a list of FAQs to serve as a resource when filling out the CEU Approval Application.

Course Providers

If you are providing a continuing education course for physical therapists or physical therapist assistants, you may be able to offer continuing education units (CEUs) for those participants. Review the CPTA application for CEU Course Approval to see if you can offer additional value to the course you are providing. It can take up to 60 days to process a standard application unless Expedited Service is requested. Be sure to read the list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below for any questions you might have regarding the application.

CPTA will be closed December 25, 2017 - January 1, 2018
The last day to submit an Expedited Continuing Education Application before the holidays is December 18th to ensure a timely response.

Individual Licentiates

If you took a course and the course provider did not apply for CEU pre-approval, you may be able to secure CEUs for the course. Complete the individual application and submit this to CPTA after the conclusion of the course. All applicants must submit the entire application including all required supplemental documents. CPTA will review your application and you may be able to receive credit for the course. Individual applications can only be submitted after the conclusion of the course or conference. Individual applications will not be accepted prior to the start of a course. Check with the course provider if you are unclear if CEUs have been awarded. It can take up to 60 days to process a standard application unless Expedited Service is requested.

Approved Continuing Education (CE) Program

The California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA) is dedicated to fostering and building a body of evidence based continuing education courses in California. To assist with this goal, CPTA has established an Approved Continuing Education (CE) Program status for continuing education providers. Current approved course providers have the opportunity to apply for Approved CE Program status through CPTA so that they may offer all of their courses to California PTs and PTAs for continuing education units without having to apply for each course individually.

Please note: Organizations must have at least a continuous three (3) year history as an approved course provider through CPTA directly prior to applying. In the twelve (12) months directly prior to applying, they must have offered a minimum of ten (10) courses or one hundred (100) contact hours to be eligible. (Eligibility will be verified by CPTA records)

  • Approved Provider Application (fillable word document)
  • Approved Provider Application (pdf file)

*The Approved CE Program application is currently unavailable while being updated.
