Course Description

Join APTA President, Sharon Dunn, PT, PhD and CPTA President, Chris Powers, PT, PhD for lunch and a look at what is ahead for the association. Each will discuss the mission and direction of the national association and the state association.

Additional speakers include Chris Reed, PT, MPT, Chair of the CPTA Government Affairs Committee and Rick Katz, PT, DPT, Chair of the CPTA Payment Policy Committee. Each will discuss their Committee’s plans for 2018, what to watch for, and how you can be involved.

Join us for lunch and informal conversation. Members who serve on CPTA Committees and who are involved in District and SIG leadership will be in attendance.  Meet with those who are currently serving and those who have served in the past to find out how to be more involved with the CPTA in 2018 or beyond. Connect with your peers and get involved with moving the profession forward! 

 

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, the participant will be able to:

 

  • Identify roles and responsibilities of APTA and CPTA leadership
  • Learn about benefits of membership in APTA and CPTA
  • Identify CPTA payment and reimbursement initiatives for 2018
  • Learn how you can be involved locally, statewide and nationally with California legislative efforts
  • Learn what bills are coming forward in 2018 and the CPTA’s position on each

Speaker

Sharon Dunn, PT, PhD, OCS, APTA President graduated in 1987 with a BS in Physical Therapy from LSUHSC in Shreveport.  She completed a Masters of Health Sciences degree in 1996 and in 2006 she earned a PhD in Cellular Biology and Anatomy.  Sharon obtained ABPTS Certification in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy in 1996, was recertified in 2006 and again in 2016.  She utilizes this content expertise in her teaching, research and clinical practice.

 

Sharon has been on faculty at LSUHSC since 1990, currently serving as Associate Professor in the DPT program and Chair of the Rehabilitation Sciences Department.  In addition, Sharon developed a post-professional residency program for Orthopaedic Physical Therapy at LSUHSC in 2008, which has since produced 20 graduates.  

 

Sharon’s service to her professional organization began when she was a student and has continued to evolve throughout her career.  She has served as the State Government Affairs Chair, Louisiana Chapter President and Vice President, and Chapter Delegate.  She most recently was elected as President of the APTA after having served as the Vice President and on the Board of Directors.  Her passions are advocacy, member engagement, and our profession’s potential to add great value to a disrupted health delivery system.

 

Chris Powers, PT, PhD, FAPTA, CPTA President is an Associate Professor in the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and Co-Director of the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Southern California. Dr. Powers is an active researcher, and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles. He frequently lectures both nationally and internationally on topics related to lower limb biomechanics and the pathomechanics of orthopaedic disorders. 

 

Dr. Powers is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association. He also is a member of the American Society for Biomechanics, American Society for Testing and Measures, and the North American Society for Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis. In addition, Dr. Powers is the current President of the California Physical Therapy Association and Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

 

Chris Reed, PT, MPT, OCS, ATC, CPTA Government Affairs Committee, Chairperson is an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist with Agile Physical Therapy in Palo Alto, CA. He graduated with a BS in Exercise and Sports Sciences from Oregon State University in 1998 and received his Masters of Physical Therapy from Mount Saint Mary’s College in 2000. Chris has been an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist since 2006. He has served in leadership roles with multiple organizations, including CPTA, throughout his career. Currently Chris is the Chair of the Government Affairs Committee, a Trustee of the CAL-PT-PAC, and Chair of the San Jose District for CPTA.

 

Rick Katz, PT, DPT, CPTA Payment Policy Committee, Chairperson received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in 1979 and obtained his Physical Therapy certification from a combined program at CSUN and UCLA in 1980. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from CSUN in 1985 and his DPT from E.I.M. Institute in 2013. Rick worked as a Physical Therapist in both hospital and outpatient settings where he developed programs for Cardiac, Pulmonary and Stroke patients along with a Sports Injury Clinic and a Coaches Clinic. He has held numerous elected and appointed positions at the national, state and local levels of the American Physical Therapy Association including CPTA Finance Officer, Chairperson of the Government Affairs Committee, Delegate, National Workforce Taskforce and member of the CPTA Executive Committee. He currently serves as the Chairperson for the CPTA’s Payment Policy Committee, member of the Finance Committee and Chairs the APTA Private Practice Section’s Vertical Integration Task Force. He is the recipient of the CPTA’s James McKillip Leadership Award, Clarence Hultgren Service Award and the Charles Magistro Service Award. 

Rick recently merged his west coast business, Adient Physical Therapy, with ATI Physical Therapy where he works as a Vice President of Operations and Payer Contracting for the western region. He also continues to serve as a Practice Expert for the Physical Therapy Licensing Board of California. Rick continues to perform direct patient care along with his management responsibilities.
