Mary taught the medical screening content to both entry-level and transitional DPT students for over 13 years as both full time and adjunct professor at Western University. Since 2013, Mary has been teaching in the transitional DPT program at Chapman University. Mary is the author of one monograph on physical exam of the lower quarter in the home study course on medical screening offered in 2004 by the Orthopedic Section of the APTA. She has been involved in teaching medical screening content at CSM and APTA National conferences as well.
This course will help formulate a more structured method for improving your screening skills and to prepare you to practice in a direct access environment. The content will include guidelines for asking review of systems questions, which will then drive the need for further physical exam and/or referral to a medical provider.
We will discuss key pathological “highlights” for screening by body system, including screening considerations in those with Diabetes and Cancer survivors. This course will then focus on two systems: (1) screening for skin lesions that may require referral and (2) common pathologies and screening exam for the peripheral vascular system. Case examples will be utilized to apply concepts to practice situations.
After successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
• Generate appropriate systems review questions based upon body region of patient’s pain or medical history
• Identify the criteria for constitutional symptoms out of normal range
• Recognize key red flags by major body system that may require referral to medical provider
• Recognize and refer for signs of cancerous or infectious lesions of the skin.
• Select appropriate physical exam tools to differentiate vascular from neurologic pain in extremities.
• Identify unsafe blood pressure and heart rate parameters during exercise
