Course Description

This course will provide a current overview of basic science literature as it pertains to injury, healing and adaptation of tissues commonly injured in musculoskeletal conditions. The rate of repair and the extent of regeneration will be discussed for bone, cartilage, muscle, tendon, ligament and nerve The impact on the rate of healing and the regenerative capacity of these various body tissues produced by the inflammatory response, systemic health conditions such as, diabetes or metabolic syndrome as well as commonly used medications like NSAIDS will be discussed. Patient case studies will be used to illustrate how this knowledge base guided clinicians in their decision making process. Specifically, patient case illustrations will consist of: chronic quadriceps strain lower extremity tendinopathy, anterior talo-fibular ligament sprain, glenohumeral articular cartilage damage and femoral neck fracture caused by use of bisphosphonate medication.

 

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the inflammatory process, specifically the dual role macrophages play in the healing process.
  2. Distinguish between the difference between repair and regeneration and describe which process is the appropriate mechanism for specific body tissues
  3. Describe mechanisms for injury, healing and adaptation of bone, articular cartilage, muscle, tendon, ligament and nerve
  4. Describe appropriate time frames and extent of healing that occurs in the various body tissues discussed.
  5. Discuss the impact of inflammation and various co morbidities such as diabetes and metabolic syndromes have on tissue healing
  6. Describe how the use of medications such as NSAIDs can influence tissue healing
  7. Reflect on successful and unsuccessful outcomes resulting from evidence-based interventions.
