Course Description

Young athletes present unique challenges to physicians, physical therapists, and trainers due to the repetitive and high strain they put on their bodies during what is now a year-round schedule of sporting activities.

Course Objectives

The conference is intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify an athlete at risk for “burnout” from single-sport specialization and overuse.
  • Understand the diagnosis and management of the “concussed” athlete.
  • Learn the current management of anterior cruciate ligament in athletes, including injury prevention, surgical intervention, and returning-to-play criteria.
  • Recognize risk factors during the pre-participation exam, inclusive of unusual cardiac events in young athletes.
  • Evaluate acute and chronic injuries to the ankle, knee, and shoulder that are common in the young athlete.
  • Understand the mechanism of how common youth sports injuries occur and be proficient in the sideline examination of the injured athlete.

Physical Therapists:
This activity has been approved by the California Physical Therapy Association for 0.7 CEUs for California physical therapists and physical therapy assistants. (CPTA #15-442)
