CPTA Town Hall Meeting

This Town Hall Meeting, hosted by the Redwood Empire District, is being held to get your input on issues of vital importance to your profession. Topics will include payment for physical therapy services (including bundled payments) and an update on legislative issues that may impact your profession. Join us for this interactive meeting. Bring your questions about any physical therapy topic. We encourage all physical therapy professionals to attend. This meeting is pending CEU approval.

Course Objectives

Following this meeting, the participant will be able to:

1. Understand emerging trends with value base payment systems
2. Learn how to best position yourself for participation in bundled payment models
3. Become familiar with the use of the new Physical Therapy evaluation codes
4. Learn about mis-valued codes and the possible impact on payment
5. Become familiar with CPTA legislative activities over the past year
6. Become familiar with CPTA legislative activities within the upcoming year

Speakers

Rick Katz, PT, DPT, MA received a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in 1979 and obtained his Physical Therapy certification from a combined program at CSUN and UCLA in 1980. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from CSUN in 1985 and his DPT from E.I.M. Institute in 2013. Rick worked as a Physical Therapist in both hospital and outpatient settings where he developed programs for Cardiac, Pulmonary and Stroke patients along with a Sports Injury Clinic and a Coaches Clinic. He has taught courses in Biomechanics, Therapeutic Agents and Administration/Management at the PT programs at CSUN. He is currently a faculty member at CSUN. He also co-taught a course in Physical Therapy Administration at Western University of Health Sciences for 10 years. He is a frequent lecturer at Mount St. Mary’s, USC, Chapman University and UOP. In addition he has held numerous elected and appointed positions at the national, state and local levels of the American Physical Therapy Association including CPTA Finance Officer, Chairperson of the Government Affairs Committee, Delegate, National Workforce Taskforce and member of the CPTA Executive Committee. He currently serves as the Chairperson for the CPTA’s Payment Policy Committee, member of the Finance Committee and Chairs the APTA Private Practice Section’s Vertical Integration Task Force. He is the recipient of the CPTA’s James McKillip Leadership Award, Clarence Hultgren Service Award and the Charles Magistro Service Award. He also received Service Awards from the Greater Los Angeles and Tricounties Districts of the CPTA and was recognized by CSUN’s School of Health and Human Development as a Distinguished Alumni.

Rick recently merged his west coast business, Adient Physical Therapy, with ATI Physical Therapy where he works as a Vice President of Operations and Payer Contracting for the western region. He also continues to serve as a Practice Expert for the Physical Therapy Licensing Board of California. Rick continues to perform direct patient care along with his management responsibilities.


Chris Reed, PT, MPT, ATC, OCS is an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist with Agile Physical Therapy in Palo Alto, CA. He graduated with a BS in Exercise and Sports Sciences from Oregon State University in 1998 and received his Masters of Physical Therapy from Mount Saint Mary’s College in 2000. Chris has been an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist since 2006. He has served in leadership roles with multiple organizations, including CPTA, throughout his career. Currently Chris is the Chair of the Government Affairs Committee, a Trustee of the CAL-PT-PAC, and Chair of the San Jose District for CPTA.
