Course Description

Building a community to advance the profession of physical therapy to improve the health of society. The APTA mission underscores the need for the physical therapy community to unite in its commitments to advance the profession of physical therapy and improve the health of society. Historically, health disparities have a strong correlation with systemic racism, and currently, amid a global pandemic and an international movement for racial justice, the physical therapy community is reckoning with race and racism in unprecedented ways.

In this 2-part series, attendees will learn about terms and constructs related to race and explore opportunities for anti-racist and culturally-responsive practices in physical therapy care, education, and research. Speakers will engage attendees in activities that will assist with application of principles across various levels of influence of the socio-ecological framework and provide resources to empower attendees to spur reflection and action within their own professional context and communities.

Course Objectives

Following this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand systemic and structural inequities in society and their impact on the health of people.
  • Understand contemporary terms and constructs associated with race and racism, and how to apply across interactions in physical therapy practice. 
  • Explore the influence of lived experience on professional interactions and world view and how to integrate culturally-responsive care into physical therapy practice.
  • Analyze barriers to anti-racist practices and facilitate use of a systems analysis to identify and dismantle inequities within and beyond the PT profession. 
  • Discuss best practice strategies across levels of influence of the socio-ecological framework and HOW these can be implemented in physical therapy.
  • Create a personal action plan for incorporating anti-racist and culturally-responsive practices within a professional context.

Speaker Bio(s)

Lisa VanHoose, PT, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor and Program Director in the Physical Therapy Department at the University of Louisiana Monroe. Dr. VanHoose received her PhD in Rehabilitation Science and MPH from the University of Kansas Medical Center.

She completed fellowships at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging and the National Institute of Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute PRIDE Summer Institute with an emphasis in Cardiovascular Genetic Epidemiology. Her Bachelor of Science in Health Science and Master of Science in Physical Therapy were completed at the University of Central Arkansas.

Dr. VanHoose has practiced oncologic physical therapy since 1996. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Oncologic Physical Therapy. As a NIH, PCORI, and industry funded researcher, Dr. VanHoose investigates socioecological models of cancer related side effects with an emphasis on minority and rural cancer survivorship. Investigations of distress in cancer survivors revealed that African American women were concerned about provider bias and other racial issues during their care. She expanded that work to explore physical and psychosocial factors responsible for health disparities in diverse groups of cancer survivors. Her team published a systematic review explaining the impact of perceived racism on health outcomes for a variety of medical conditions and diseases affecting African American women. Other work includes qualitative investigations into community identified risk factors of cardiovascular disease in African American men.

She serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff workgroup for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). She currently serves on the Special Populations: Nursing Home subcommittee for Gov. John Bel Edwards Louisiana COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force. She has been an advocate for movement of all persons, including the elimination of social policies and practices that are barriers to movement friendly environments.

Rupal M Patel, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the School of Physical Therapy at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Houston, Texas. Dr. Patel coordinates the two health promotion and wellness courses in the entry-level DPT curriculum at TWU in Houston, one with a focus on the PT’s role in community health promotion specifically addressing health disparities in underserved populations that have limited access to prevention, health promotion and wellness services. Her dissertation research focused on community based, culturally targeted lifestyle modification programs to reduce risk factors for diabetes for an at-risk population. Dr. Patel is a founding member of the APTA's Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Wellness, recently completed her term as an elected member of the APTA Nominating Committee (2017-2020) serving as Chair in 2020, and her term as a member of the APTA Staff Workgroup on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (2018-2020). Currently she is the chair of the ANPT Advocacy and Consumer Affairs Committee (2018-present), member of HPA The Catalyst Section’s Publications Committee (2016-present), Key Contact for the Social Justice in Health: DEI Catalyst Group of the HPA (2020-present), chair of the Texas Physical Therapy Association Bylaws Committee (2018-present), member of the DEI Task Force for the TPTA (2020-present), and a board member of the Physical Therapy Learning Institute (2018-present). In 2020, Dr. Patel was a co-recipient of a grant from HPA The Catalyst for a project titled "Effectiveness of a novel educational intervention to increase attitudes, knowledge, and skills of Doctor of Physical Therapy students' in addressing the social determinants of health." Shas taught continuing education courses at various local, state, and national conferences as well as within educational programs and community organizations. Most recently Dr. Patel co-presented on DEI in PT with the CN District of the Ohio Physical Therapy Association and joined Move Together, Inc’s CEO, in a Movement Healthy Equity Conversation on Facebook Live.

Kai Kennedy, PT, DPT serves as an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair of Equity in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Kennedy has extensive experience addressing issues of health equity through the lens of functional movement. She works with partners to scale up rehabilitative care in underserved communities in the United States, the Caribbean, and West Africa. She has a keen interest in developing innovative curricular strategies that prepare students of health professions to provide effective care in community-centered programs. She is also interested in issues of representation, equity, and inclusion physical therapy and health professions education globally. Dr. Kennedy has a longstanding record of professional service and currently serves on the APTA Nominating Committee. She is the first physical therapist to be named Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity.

Fatmata Kabia’s personal and professional mission is to inspire and empower students to achieve their highest potential through education. Ms. Kabia currently serves as the Co-Chair of Admissions at Rutgers Doctor of Physical Therapy South Program. She serves on a number of committees focused on DEI which include the APTAnj Cultural Diversity Committee, Rutgers School of Health Professions Equity Task force, and DPT South Diversity Task force. Ms. Kabia received her Master of Public Administration degree from Rutgers University and she is currently completing her EdD in Educational Leadership. Her research interests include DEI policies and practices in higher education, the "education deficit" in graduate education, and holistic admissions strategies. She has co-presented with Drs. Cauilan-Aguila and Tooles during the 2020 CSM Educational Session on "Physical Therapy As a Culturally Diverse and Inclusive Profession: Building the Foundation", co-presented with these colleagues at numerous APTA state chapters, and presented a poster during the 2020 CSM conference entitled "Transforming Admissions in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program through a Holistic Approach". Ms. Kabia is scheduled to co-present with Drs. Canhan, McGee, and VanHoose at the 2021 Combined Sections Meeting on "All Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Arrows Point to Holistic Review in Admissions: A Panel on Implementation".
