Course Description

Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for ~5000 years. The purpose of this evidence-based review is to summarize the current evidence related to the effectiveness of cannabinoids for the treatment of several conditions. Many of the medical indications for the use of cannabinoids are found in patients seeking Physical Therapy services; e.g., pain. The subjects of this study are primarily systematic reviews and meta-analyses published since 2014. Earlier studies were excluded for a variety of reasons including significant increases in the strength of the preparations used in the more recent studies. Studies varied widely in terms of: 1) use of whole plant material, cannabis extracts or synthetic ingredients; and 2) routes of administration. The author of this study attempted to: 1) summarize the findings related to the effectiveness of cannabinoids; and 2) summarize the quality and strength of the evidence in support of those findings.

Following this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  1. describe major components and known functions of the endocannabinoid system.
  2. discuss the evidence that cannabinoids are effective analgesics for treating pain
  3. describe the evidence that cannabinoids are effective for improving symptoms of spasticity in people with multiple sclerosis
  4. discuss the evidence that cannabinoids are effective as an antiemetic for chemotherapy-induced nausea/vomiting and for addressing weight loss associated with HIV/AIDS
  5. describe the most common adverse events associated with the use of cannabinoids.
