Course Description

This course content is designed with Therapists and clinicians in mind – care providers who develop relationships over multiple treatment sessions. Through observations and conversations, the therapist can engage in the exploration of the health and nutritional needs of their patients. Improving the patient’s overall health and outlook on wellness can lead to improved treatment and long-term outcomes

Following this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the legal and ethical issues related to direct nutrition counseling by therapy staff
  2. Using objective screening tools, identify a patient at risk for malnutrition
  3. Identify appropriate protein intake ranges for malnourished patients
  4. Understand how diet can exacerbate an inflammatory response
  5. Name three foods that would benefit a patient with a chronic inflammatory condition

Speaker Bios

Mary Long, PT, DPT, graduated from PT school from California State University, Long Beach in 1980. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology from California State University, Fullerton in 1989. She obtained her DPT in 2004 from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.

Dr. Long received her OCS in 1998 and CHT specialization in 2001. She has worked at St. Jude Medical Center, and in a private practice setting, in various areas of care including neuro rehab, acute hospital, cardiac rehab, industrial and chronic pain rehab, and orthopedics and hand therapy. In 2012, Mary became a STAR certified clinician for Cancer Rehab. She taught as a full time faculty member at Western University of Health Sciences for 10 years while maintaining active clinical practice.

Mary taught the medical screening content to both entry-level and transitional DPT students since 1999 in addition to teaching some of the musculoskeletal content at Western University. Mary was the author of one monograph on physical exam of the lower quarter in the home study course on medical screening offered in 2004 by the Orthopedic Section of the APTA. She has been involved in teaching medical screening content at CSM and APTA National conferences as well as several local district presentations and courses.

Mary’s current position is as the Special Projects Coordinator at St. Jude Medical Center, where she assists the Director and managers in the Rehab Division and treats patients half time as part of the Hand Therapy treatment team. Mary is happy to be associated with Chapman University, teaching the medical screening course in the transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Megan S Wroe, MS, RD, CLEC, is a registered dietitian, certified lactation educator counselor and certified culinary nutrition expert. Megan received her Master’s degree in nutrition and food science from Cal Poly Pomona and completed her RD at the VA Los Angeles. Megan has always had a passion for teaching and has worked in a variety of educator position within the nutrition field, including school districts, outpatient pediatrics and private practice. Megan is also a lecturer for Cal Poly Pomona and teaches several online nutrition courses. Her current full time position, is a program developer and health coach for St. Jude Wellness Center, where she works closely with the rehab team. Her primary programs are a holistic, comprehensive weight loss program and a food-focused anti-inflammatory workshop series, but she also provides individual consultations for patients in the rehab facility who need anti-inflammatory diets, as well as teaches seminars to patients and colleagues on nutrition topics under this umbrella topic. As a culinary nutrition expert, Megan firmly believes in a food-focused approach to health and healing and is well versed in how to modify recipes and meal plans to meet dietary needs in delicious ways.
