Common barriers to the use of HVLA techniques cited by physical therapists include lack of confidence and insufficient instruction. These lead to underutilization of spinal HVLA techniques in clinical practice. This course will address specific barriers to implementation of HVLA techniques in the clinic, including safety, therapist confidence, and patient selection. Techniques will be presented with an emphasis on patient and therapist comfort, ease of use, and safety. Strategies to facilitate ongoing practice and technique refinement will also be discussed. The course will primarily consist of lab sessions with interspersed instructional components. There will be a review of evidence pertaining to HVLA, indications/contraindications to HVLA, a discussion of VBI/CAD testing, and concepts related to the model of spinal positioning and locking for HVLA. Specific techniques and strategies from osteopathic and Australian traditions will be presented. There will be ample time for practice and one on one attention.
Participants: Physical Therapists only
