This pre-conference course aims to accelerate the manual therapist’s path to expert practice of maximizing outcome with lesser visit counts in the overhead athlete. Efficient utilization of multimodal interventions may maximize outcome, as suggested by systematic reviews. However, majority of these manual (including high velocity, low amplitude and advanced techniques) and movement approaches has been published in isolation and have not been widely presented in combination to optimize results. Often overlooked and a common drawback is the missed interplay and contribution of the cervical and thoracic spine as well as the shoulder regions in upper quarter symptoms, leading to less than ideal effects. Simplify and fast track the real-time differentiation and verification of impairments from these three regions, as the cause and source of the problem thereby achieving optimal outcomes.
This exciting hands-on course aims to refine participants’ analysis of the throwing mechanics by highlighting key moments in overhead motion. Poor motor control or aberrant motions in the upper quarter (including, thoracic spine, glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints) have critical implications for movement analysis and movement coordination retraining, according to current evidence synthesis. To assess who may be at a higher likelihood of an upper extremity injury, video comparisons of optimal and non-optimal movements will be used to train the eye of the clinician. Participants will integrate advanced impairment-based examinations, including the use of mobile apps for movement analysis, and specific interventions to achieve the desired outcomes. It will feature scientifically proven yet simple patient-specific progression strategies for the manual therapist who is also a movement specialist.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Learn advanced manual and movement skills to examine and evaluate the most clinically salient impairments from general orthopedics to professional sports
- Value movement analysis to appraise movement aberrations in athletes with upper quarter dysfunction, including use of widely available mobile applications
- Judge when, how, and why merging orthopaedic manual and movement science skill sets are essential in managing upper extremity dysfunction in the orthopaedic patient
- Conclude scientific progression of advanced cervico-thoracic and shoulder interventions
90 minutes: Clinical pattern recognition concepts to fast track treatment decisions and scientific progression of advanced interventions
60 minutes: Lab skills (including advanced cervical spine techniques) demonstration and practice
60 minutes: Movement analysis of key overhead movements through slow motion video recognition. Understanding normal vs aberrant.
60 minutes: Fast track evaluation, interventions and progression using advanced manual and movement approaches of the cervico-thoracic, shoulder region to augment local interventions
60 minutes: Lab skills (including cervico-thoracic manipulation techniques) demonstration and practice
60 minutes: Advanced cervico-thoracic and shoulder intervention- including blood flow restriction (BFR) training applied in professional sports
60 minutes: Lab skills demonstration and practice (putting it all together)
30 minutes: Questions and answers
Dr. Emmanuel “Manny” Yung is clinical assistant professor at Sacred Heart University (SHU) DPT program, teaching musculoskeletal physical therapy and has mentored orthopaedic PT residents since 2012. He also guest lectures at MGH Institute of Health Professions’ “Elevating Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Practice” in Boston, MA.
Dr. Yung has 6 published peer-reviewed journal articles, made over 40 peer-reviewed presentations nationally and internationally, and spoke at 7 APTA Combined Sections Meeting educational sessions. His service to the profession includes Education Committee Vice Chair and Medical Screening Clinical Practice Guideline co-author of the APTA Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy, JOSPT manuscript and imaging reviewer, APTA ABPTRFE residency competency instrument workgroup member, Core Research Committee member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT), among other appointments. Manny is Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist since 1998 and is a fellow of AAOMPT having completed his Manual Therapy Fellowship training at Southern California Kaiser Permanente program since 2003. Manny has won research, teaching, practice awards presented by AAOMPT, Sacred Heart University and Kaiser respectively. He graduated from University of Southern California with a DPT degree. He is also an NIH/NIOSH ERC grant funded PhD candidate at New York University Ergonomics and Biomechanics program.
Prior to SHU, he was the Site Director and Clinical Faculty of the Orthopaedic PT Residency Program at Kaiser Permanente in West Los Angeles, California where he mentored Orthopaedic PT residents for 10 years and guest lectured yearly to over 25 residents of 9 Kaiser Permanente and 5 other Southern California Orthopaedic PT Residency Programs (these programs include Cedars-¬‐Sinai, Healthcare Partners, Casa Colina, Fortanasce and Associates, and Glendale Adventist).
Dr. Yung has more than 28 years of experience, 23 years of these are in musculoskeletal physical therapy including previous stints at the former: Professional Sports Care in Pasadena, California then co-owned by Byron Hansen (recently retired New York Giants Football Team Coordinator of Rehabilitation); Columbia-Presbyterian Center for Sports Medicine (faculty included New York Yankees Major League Baseball Head Team Physician Dr. Stuart Hershon) in Upper East Side Manhattan, New York; and PT Clinic inside The Sports Club/LA in Los Angeles, California. At Kaiser, he was also the Coordinator for Clinical Education of physical therapy students from 9 Southern California PT schools (including University of Southern California, Azusa Pacific University, Mount Saint Mary’s College, Loma Linda University, California State University Long Beach, California State University Northridge, Western University, Chapman University and University of Saint Augustine).
Drew Morcos, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, DNSP, ATC, CSCS, FAAOMPT is the President and CEO of MOTUS Specialists Physical Therapy, Inc. in Newport Beach for amateur/professional and active clients. He has experience working with top athletes in professional sports including Russell Wilson and Antonio Brown (NFL), Carmelo Anthony (NBA) and Steve Johnson (ATP), to name a few. Prior to opening his own clinic, he was the Director of Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California-Athletic Medicine Department. He continues to serve as an Adjunct Instructor of Clinical Physical Therapy for the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at USC. He earned a B.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from USC in 2007 followed by completion of a residency in Orthopaedics and a fellowship in Sports Physical Therapy through Kaiser
Permanente, Los Angeles. He has experience as an athletic trainer and physical therapist in Division 1 Athletics, NFL, USA and AVP Beach Volleyball and the World’s Strongest Man Competition. He is on the board of context experts to design item questions for the Sports Clinical Specialist exam. He served as the clinical instructor for the USC Division 1 Sports Residency program. He is also a clinical instructor for the Kaiser Permanente Sports Fellowship program. He has published articles in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (JOSPT), New York Post and ESPN. He has presented educational sessions for the APTA’S Combined Sections Meeting since 2014. He has been trained through the Professor Vladimir Janda and Professor Vaclav Vojta Approach. He has over seven years of experience in Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) and became a certified practitioner of DNS in 2015.
