This program is recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as a Clinical Instructor (CI) Education and Credentialing Program. The program was developed through a grant funded by APTA.
The program addresses issues of planning and preparing for students from the health care disciplines during their clinical education experiences; developing learning experiences and supporting ongoing learning through questioning and effective feedback. Skills of evaluation are discussed, as well as the identification and management of students with exceptional situations. The program closes with a brief look at legal implications for clinical educators, including issues presented by ADA legislation.
The “Assessment Center” provides each participant with the opportunity to apply information from the program in simulated situations. Successful completion of each station in the Assessment Center results in the awarding of APTA’s CI Credential. The six assessment center stations are integrated into the program schedule.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

- Demonstrate skills to manage the exceptional student
- Discuss legal issues in clinical education
Michael Simpson, PT, DPT is the Director of the Clinical Education program in the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at University of Southern California. He is a Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist. He primarily practices in the acute care and critical care setting. He teaches clinical management of cardiovascular, pulmonary and general medical conditions, and threads acute care patient/client management throughout the curriculum.
