Course Description

While therapeutic exercise is a cornerstone of intervention in clinical practice, the framework to precisely prescribe the appropriate dose and dosage for each therapeutic exercise is not universally practiced. Well-intentioned clinicians often rely on guesswork to determine the starting resistance for strengthening exercises. This is especially problematic in the adult population with pain in that under-dosing may lead to ineffective exercises and over-dosing may result in additional pain and even injury. Implementing appropriate dosing and dosage strategies will allow the clinician to achieve effective and efficient neuromuscular responses. Application of hand-held dynamometry to therapeutic exercise prescription is a client-centered approach that brings individualized exercise dosing and progression; stimulates client engagement and compliance and demonstrates skilled therapeutic intervention.

Course Objectives

Following this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe dose, volume and dosage variables
  • Recognize how dose variables differ in three presented case studies with the same medical diagnosis but with different pain profiles
  • Describe the application of objective strength assessment as an individualized client metric for client motivation and engagement
  • Describe the use of hand-held dynamometry and Clinical Fatigue to establish appropriate therapeutic exercise intensity
