Course Description

Nutrition status plays a key role in disease development, progression as well as recovery. Many individuals seeking physical therapy have altered nutrition needs. Proper nutrition is critical for these individuals to complete physical therapy and other rehabilitation. This workshop will cover the Nutrition Care Process followed by registered dietitians, how physical therapies and registered dietitians can coordinate care, the role of physical therapists in nutrition screening. Relations between foods and inflammation, basic nutrition care (including how to estimate of nutrition needs) of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases will be covered. Sources of reliable nutrition information will be provided.


Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the program, the participant will be able to:

  • List the steps of the Nutrition Care Process
  • Understand the role of physical therapists in nutrition screening
  • Diagnose malnutrition per the 2012 AND/ASPEN standards
  • Understand when to refer patients to registered dietitians for coordinated care
  • List the basic nutrition care of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Identify proper sources for reliable nutrition information


Dr. Long Wang, MD, PhD, RDN received his medical degrees at Hebei Medical University in China with a specialty in radiation oncology. His PhD studies at Purdue University focused on impacts of long-change fatty acids in gene expression related to lipid metabolism. He is a faculty in the nutrition program at California State University, Long Beach. His current research focuses on taste testing in congenital aglossia, a condition where people were born with a tongue, and taste testing and rehabilitation of people with more common diseases such as head and neck cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. He teaches Introductory Nutrition, Advanced Nutrition and Medical Nutrition Therapy. He also serves as Coordinator of Doctoral Individualized Supervised Practice Pathways.

Dr. Wang is a registered dietitian/nutritionist and an active leader in the field of nutrition and dietetics. He was a Diversity Leader at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (2012-2014). Currently, he serves as a Program Reviewer at Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics and the Public Advocacy Leader of Chinese Americans in Dietetics and Nutrition.

This course is pending approval for 8 contact hours (0.8 CEUs) by the California Physical Therapy Association.
