Course Description

Dr. Rea will address the role of nutrition in the field of physical therapy and how physical
therapists are an ideal healthcare provider to be encouraging healthy nutrition patterns
with their patients. Furthermore, she will talk about how nutrition can impact the
inflammatory response, thereby helping or hindering the musculoskeletal rehabilitation
process. She will conclude by reviewing basic nutritional recommendations specifically
for the athlete and elderly.


Course Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explore the role of nutrition in physical therapy
  • Understand how nutrition impacts musculoskeletal pain and inflammation
  • Describe specific nutrition recommendations for the athlete and elderly


Dr. Brenda Rea has been with Loma Linda University for over 20 years working and
teaching in the School of Public Health, Physical Therapy Department and School of
Medicine. She completed education in physical therapy, nutrition and dietetics as well as
public health prior her medical school training at Loma Linda University. As a physical
therapist she worked primarily in inpatient neurological rehabilitation and acute
pediatric settings and taught physical therapy courses that included exercise physiology,
health promotion and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. She is now a Family Medicine
physician who has a passion for whole person care in addition to the prevention and
treatment of chronic disease through lifestyle, functional and integrative medicine.
