Course Description

This course presents a structured exam for the upper quarter athlete. The content incorporates biomechanical, movement and sport-specific based assessments. Treatments are based on the concepts of anatomical slings, chains and loops. Vector, stealth, chain, spiral, combo and functional use of CLX bands are incorporated to facilitate sport specific exercises. Sports covered include swimming, tennis, baseball, volleyball and rock climbing. This course is open to all experience levels and will have content application to PT and PTA practice.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the biomechanics and sports specific demands of upper quarter sports, including: Swimming, tennis, baseball, volleyball and rock climbing
  • Understand the importance of regional interdependence of the upper quarter and its functional relationship to pathobiomechanics
  • Demonstrate and select appropriate movement assessments and treatments for the upper quarter athlete
  • Provide interventions based on faulty movement patterns observed relating to the key impairments obtained from the objective examination
  • Learn current research supporting movement and sport specific assessments and treatments


Jared Vagy, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California. He completed a one-year residency program and became a Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist. He then completed an additional one-year fellowship program in Movement Science at Kaiser Permanente Hospital. Dr. Jared Vagy is a professor at USC in the DPT Program, has published numerous articles on injury prevention and delivers lectures and seminars internationally on the topic. He is a mentor for both the USC Physical Therapy residency program and the USC DPT program. He is on Academy Faculty for the TheraBand Academy and is on the Editorial Board for ADVANCE Physical Therapy magazine. He served as team physical therapist in China for the Chinese National Track and Field team. His assessments and treatments are rooted deeply in an understanding of the movement system.
