Learning Objectives

Clinical Practice in Physical Therapy - Future Directions

1.Understand the current drivers in the physical therapy clinical practice.

2. Describe what is constitutes a clinical practice guideline.
3. Describe the responsibility that guideline development groups must take on.
4. Discuss how guideline implementation tools will change the healthcare and fitness market, domestically and internationally
5. Explore the impact of the statements “Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience” and “Physical Therapists improve the way you Move.”


Current State of Payment

1.Understand the impact of Utilization Management companies and Third Party Administrators on access and payment for PT
2.Become familiar with the upcoming and proposed payment changes under the Medicare System.
3.Learn how to utilize tools to improve access to care for your patients
4.Gain information on recent developments with payers such as Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield and Cigna
5.Learn of upcoming initiatives being developed to reduce the influence of third party administrators on access to physical therapy.


Joe Godges, PT, DPT is an Associate Professor of clinical physical therapy at the University of Southern California where his primary role is to provide educational support and clinical supervision for clinical residency and fellowship programs. He is also the ICF-based Clinical Practice Guidelines Coordinator for the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. In addition, Dr. Godges is currently serving his third term as a member of the Board of Directors for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.


Richard Katz, PT, DPT, MA Bachelor of Science Degree, Health Science, California State University, Northridge, Certificate in Physical Therapy from CSUN/UCLA Hospital and Clinics, Master of Arts in Exercise Science, California State University, Northridge. Doctor of Physical Therapy from E.I.M., Louisville, KY. Rick has served as Finance Officer for the California Physical Therapy Association for three terms. Member of the Executive Committee, Chairperson of Government Affairs Committee, Chairperson of Public Relations Committee and currently the Chairperson of the Payment Policy Committee. He serves on the Private Practice Section of the APTA on the Payment Policy Committee, Chair of the ACO sub-committee, and serves on the Healthcare Policy Taskforce. He is also a past member of the APTA Workforce Task Force. Rick is a faculty member at California State University, Northridge and at Chapman University. He is the recipient of the James McKillip Leadership Award and Charles Magistro Service Award. He is currently the President of Adient Physical Therapy, a multi-state Physical Therapy practice where he combines administrative and patient care duties.

Exit 101 and go towards the ocean on Patterson, cross Hollister. Pass Medical office building immediately on R corner, then pass Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital front entrance on the Right. Follow the signs for Outpatient Therapy and Wound Care Center, and pull into parking lot on R side of street just after the main hospital building. Go in side entrance of hospital and there will be a security greeter to give you a visitor badge at this entrance. The Outpatient Therapy department is on your right as you enter the hospital from the security/greeter check in desk.
