Candidate Statement

Being fresh out of the PTA program at San Diego Mesa College, I can tell you a large portion of our training specifically addresses how PTA’s can work collaboratively with the PT. Every day we talk about the different methods to foster open communication, seek to advance in our competencies, and work together not only as patient advocates, but to support the respective roles of PT’s and PTA’s. Ultimately, the PT and PTA are a team whose priority is effective, patient-centric care. After participating in the Student Conclave at University of Saint Augustine 2014, it became clear that we should increase awareness of what PTA’s contribute to physical therapy and the PT. San Diego Mesa College PTA program has been collaborating with SDSU PT program to offer clinical rotations with both PT and PTA students working together at clinical sites to better learn how to cultivate this relationship. I believe this type of program is what we should be promoting within all student programs. It would also be beneficial to offer break-out sessions at the CPTA Conferences and Student Conclaves that offer scenario-based, team-building activities that highlight the dynamic roles of the PT and PTA. The PTA’s role within the CPTA should be similar to that of a PT, in that, we want to promote physical therapy with California, promote our role within the professional field, to encourage PTA involvement within the CPTA to contribute and enhance the professional identity, leadership, networking, and political outreach of the Association.

I look forward to discussing more in person!
