Membership FAQs

What is APTA?

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a national professional organization representing more than 88,000 members. Its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapy practice, research, and education.

What is CPTA?

The California Physical Therapy Association is a Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association, which represents more than 7,000 physical therapists and physical therapist assistants nationwide. As the third largest Physical Therapy association in the world, the California Physical Therapy Association remains the largest voice for the physical therapy profession in the state of California.

Do I have to belong to both APTA and CPTA?

Yes. Simultaneous payment of national and chapter dues is required. You must belong to the chapter of the state in which you live, work or attend school, or of an adjacent state if more active participation is possible.

Am I eligible for APTA membership?

To become a member, you must be accepted to or enrolled in a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant program that is accredited or is seeking or has been granted candidacy status by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (see qualifications on application), or have graduated from an accredited PT or PTA program.

Am I eligible for APTA membership if I graduated outside the United States?

If you graduated outside of the United States, you must submit specific documentation for membership. Please contact APTA's Membership Department for details.

Can I join if I’m a PT or PTA student?

Yes. If you’re enrolled in a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant program that is accredited or seeking accreditation, you’re eligible for APTA membership.

What are the dues?

Is there a way to split up my dues payments?

Yes. APTA’s Installment Dues Program makes membership more affordable by allowing you to pay your membership dues in four equal installments over six months. Note: this program is only available when paying by credit card. When you join APTA or renew your membership, complete the appropriate section on the membership application or renewal form. You may also sign up for this program when joining or renewing via the Web or phone.
